Pakistani FM meets UK minister to discuss trade, economic reforms and elections

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Caretaker Foreign Minister Jalil Abbas Jilani on Wednesday met British state minister for foreign, commonwealth, and development office Lord Tariq Ahmad in London to discuss collaborative efforts between the two countries in trade, economic reforms and climate change cooperation, the Pakistani high commission in London said.
The Pakistani foreign minister is in London for the 10th Commonwealth Youth Ministers Meeting (CYMM) which is being chaired by the Pakistani government. The event is scheduled to take place from September 11th to 15th, 2023, and is centered around the theme, ‘Aiming Higher: Delivering More for Young People in the Commonwealth.’
“Foreign Minister Jalil Abbas met with the FCDO Minister Lord Tariq Ahmad at the CYMM,” the high commission wrote on social media platform X.
“Expressing satisfaction [with] the current trajectory of bilateral ties, they explored new opportunities in trade, education & climate cooperation, strengthening the enduring Pakistan-Britain partnership.”

Ahmad described his meeting with the Pakistani minister as a “warm and constructive one.”
“We discussed a wide range of bilateral issues, including forthcoming [Pakistani] elections & the need for inclusivity, security, economic reform and human rights,” Ahmad wrote on X.

In addition to engaging with representatives from various nations during the event, Jilani also took on the role of chairing a session focused on climate change. During the session, he emphasized the importance of empowering the youth across Commonwealth nations to effectively address climate change challenges.
Pakistan and the United Kingdom have a long and shared history that is bolstered by the 1.6 million Pakistani diaspora in the kingdom, which is at the heart of the relationship between the two countries.
